Variants

Request(String)

A request to IMDS itself failed — no route to 169.254.169.254 (not running on EC2, or the link-local route is firewalled), a timeout, or a non-2xx status.

Response(String)

IMDS answered, but not with something this reads as credentials — most often no IAM role attached to the instance at all.
