The bottom of the ladder: the dot, on a lattice of its own, painted at one and two pixels a site for the 16 and 32 pixel tiles.
Sixteen sites hold no letterform at all — not two lines of three
glyphs, not one glyph, and not a knockout either, since a hole needs
sites too and a “d” cut small enough to leave the specks their ring
